The Upper Cumberland Group is sponsoring an educational tour and potluck lunch with the Meadow Creek Conservation Coalition, just outside Monterey, on March 1st from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. We want to acquaint Sierra members and the public with the 1750 acres of natural Cumberland Plateau eco-system with beautiful bluffs, hiking trails and hemlock forests, but where the effects of an underground coal mine, long since abandoned, are still evident on the land. We will see where acid mine drainage still discolors Meadow Creek. We will also see the site of a controversial proposed sand quarry. Bring your own picnic lunch or a dish to share. If the weather is nice, and you want to take a hike, bring your hiking boots or walking shoes. Directions: From I-40 take Exit 300 toward Monterey. Turn right at 2nd traffic light just past Imperial Hotel. Go 6 miles on Hwy 62 toward Clarkrange/Jamestown (note mile markers). Driveway (on left) is just past Forestry Station on right.
