Harvey Broome Group Knoxville, TN

Who we are - What we do:

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

We are a national organization, but also a grassroots organization with state Chapters and Groups within each state.  Tennessee has five groups and we are the Harvey Broome Group (HBG). We are based in Knoxville but include Sierra Club members from twenty-one surrounding counties.

The Harvey Broome Group was named in honor of Knoxville native Harvey Broome (1902-1968), a pioneering environmentalist and founding Member of the Wilderness Society. Find out more about Harvey Broome here: Broome.

Conservation activities range from the nationwide Beyond Coal Campaign that promotes using clean, renewable energy vs. fossil fuels, to local support for expanding Knoxville's greenways, to helping elect environmentally responsible candidates at the local, state and national level, to getting the Little Tennessee River Watershed designated as a native fish conservancy area.

Outings include 41 hikes this year ranging from easy day hikes to overnight backpacking. Also, we lead "urban hikes" in and around Knoxville. Our Inspiring Connections Outdoors (ICO) program actively engages low-income inner city youth and adults, in safe and enjoyable outdoor experiences.

Monthly Programs range from the educational like "Birds - Listing, Education, and Conservation" by John O'Barr, Knoxville Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society (Feb. 10) to "adventure" programs like a recent program by Bill Walker, a hiker, story teller and author, who talked about his adventures on many of the world's famous long-distance hiking trials in a presentation titled "The World's Best Treks Available to the Average Person."

Our monthly programs are on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. Business meetings are on the 4th Tuesday of each month. Both are at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, 2931 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919. Both start at 7pm.

As a Tennessee Chapter, Harvey Broome Group member you will receive the bimonthly issue of the Tennessee Chapter news in the Tennes-Sierran, along with HBGÕs monthly electronic newsletter. This e-newsletter has details about local program meetings, outings, conservation issues, and other activities.

The members of the HBG are residents of 1084 households in 21 counties in eastern TN. The counties with the most households are: Knox (492), Blount (125), Anderson (109), Sevier (75), Roane (64), and Loudon (62).
